This is sounding less and less like anything Maula would have anything to do with… How the heck did they come to the (no doubt mistaken) conclusion that it was her?
I think it is because of racial attitudes. It looks like the land they are in is not unsimilar to the US South (for a long stretch of history). Where if you are not a "civilized" person (Human, Elves, Halflings… pretty much any race that is in the standard set of races available to PCs) you are not to be trusted and by extension looked on with distrust and hatred.
Orcs, in fantasy settings such as this, are generally portrayed of as being ready to solve any problem through force, they revel in it and want to make sure everyone knows that they don’t hesitate to respond to a threat. They’re a warrior culture and are proud of that.
I’ll try not to get too political but the gauntlet has been cast.
The ‘US south’ reference has absolutely nothing to do with that, if you want to see real racism in action go to any US city and wander into the ‘wrong’ district or listen to any ‘woke’ lecturer trying to make a fast buck saying ‘white kids are born racist’. THAT’s the most ‘racist’ thing anyone’s said so far.
If you want to talk slavery, ask yourself which tribe sold which other tribe to the muslim slavetraders who pushed their ‘product’ on other countries. Nobody went looking for slaves, they bought them in the markets that had been established thousands of years before.
For the record, I’m not a ‘WASP’ or even mostly European Caucasian (and the great saint ‘bama was only half-black)…genetics have little to do with disposition to foolishness, a culture that preaches to their children that everyone owes it something so they don’t have to do anything useful except collect cheques, does.
The only reason I said it was like the US South is because of the guy who is in charge. A Halfling dressed like FLIPPING BOSS HOGG from the Dukes of Hazzard.
In defense of Oldarmourer, I also bristled when I saw that "US South" comment. It gets really tiresome being tarred with that 40 year old brush. On a positive note, this did remind me of the movie "Life" with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence, and I spent a good 45 minutes watching movie clips on youtube.
For someone with little disposition for foolishness, you sure do spout foolish racism like it’s going out of style. Your lack of actual knowledge is painful.
sorry, I refer to history as it happened, not how the ‘woke’ crows want it to be.
save the ‘racist’ slurs for those who use them, using it as an attack on those who don’t parrot what you think they should just cheapens it.
Why does Abbot Heigh feel impelled to tell us whose body Carruthers inspected? They’ve only been talking about her for the last half dozen strips and it was stated that she was the victim only yesterday.
We know Carruthers knows it was poisoning, but that’s it. A little early to say definitively she knows WHICH poison was used. I mean, I wouldn’t put it past her, but she’s working with rennaisance level tech with very little magical support, and instantaneous access to the sum total of discovered knowledge is a long time coming for the world of YAFGC.
Now, for it to be Name of the Rose sort of shenanigans, that would implicate that the book in question would be in high esteem and also considered heretical. And that someone knew this and had opportunity to booby-trap said book. There would also have to be traces of the discolouration on at least one digit.
All we can infer right now is that the poison was ingested. And also that the harpsichord probably was used as Captain Carruthers deduced, but that does not mean it is certain.
I personally feel now that the main reason why Lady Bloodhand is the accused is because she is one of the few not truly suspected, and part of a ruse to draw the real culprit out. When trying to put pressure on something that is too tight, it helps to apply t’ orc pressure.
there MAY have been discoloration on the fingers, but it may have not been noticed yet. And the nature of the book would not necessarily signify, so long as the intended victim was known to read that book on a regular basis.
I’m finding this especially amusing because southeast of me is a county park by the name of Pratt’s Falls, and much further southeast (in a different county) is Prattsville, and my brain keeps connecting them with the comic.
and then we find out she HAD been licking her finger to turn pages and that transferred some ink onto her tongue…after she’d had a cup of her favourite chamomile tea…
May you have a glorious day, Rich!!! (And year and life too, of course π π Huge hugs for the birthday boy, I hope it’s filled with lots of love and laughter, and no work π
Thank you for the birthday wishes everyone! I’m so sorry I haven’t been around -and I know you’re all going to say it’s okay and you’ll all still be here and I don’ t have to apologize, but what I’m saying is: I am sorry in the sense that it’s disappointing for me to be missing out on the more active turnover on these pages.
I’ve updates YAFGC again, so as of tomorrow there’ll be more strips. It’s hard for me to keep it up because of a crazy schedule beween work and getting my increasingly active kids to where they’ve got to be throughout the week. But I’ve found some gaps that I’m going to try to fill with more YAFGC! So fingers crossed, I’m going to be more around I hope!
This is sounding less and less like anything Maula would have anything to do with… How the heck did they come to the (no doubt mistaken) conclusion that it was her?
Also, why is my mind trying to make ‘prattroot’ into a Terry Pratchett Reference?
I sense a pratfall taking root….
> Also, why is my mind trying to make βprattrootβ into a Terry Pratchett Reference?
Alliteration.
Probably conjoined with the fact that we’ve had Pratchett references before.
It IS a reference, though – just not to Terry Pratchett.
t!
Name of the Rose would be my thought
Maybe we’ll find that orcs like prattroot and can survive amounts that are toxic to other races?

Hear, hear rarely heard it said better

This comment is going to be a yikes from me dawg. You’re bringing a lot of political baggage into a conversation about a fantasy world.
For someone with little disposition for foolishness, you sure do spout foolish racism like it’s going out of style. Your lack of actual knowledge is painful.

> How the heck did they come to the (no doubt mistaken) conclusion that it was her?
In addition to other things, they haven’t lived with her for years and years, like we have!
t!
At 1st blush? Prattroot poisoning?
Point? Complete sentence?
t!
Black tongue? It may have been Name of the Rose-style book poison!
The black tongue is 100% a nod to that story.
t!
Hence why I mentioned Sean Connery in the last strip. π
And why didn’t they give all this information from the begining?
This still IS the beginning.
t!
Well, this is a nice surprise π
Why does Abbot Heigh feel impelled to tell us whose body Carruthers inspected? They’ve only been talking about her for the last half dozen strips and it was stated that she was the victim only yesterday.
He’s not telling us. He’s upset that Captain Carruthers abruptly called Taurenil, who’s been referred to by name up until this point, "the victim".
Abbot Heigh feels she’s being disrespectful.
Thank you, MDF.
You have no idea how much it means to me to see someone approach this strip with an open mind and an open heart.
t!
You’re welcome.
I thought you conveyed it quite clearly.
There’s undoubtedly stuff I’ve misconstrued and misread throughout this strip’s long run myself, I’m sure. π
And, with the devious minds behind this story at work, there may well be more to this…
as Rich is fond of saying: "Maaayyybeee… "
t!
And kudos to Cadugan. Trust the ranger to recognize a plant poison from its description. π
I could kiss you so hard right now.
t!
I’m flattered. It’s a great character moment, and it fits perfectly.
It will be even better if the others hadn’t figured that out yet. Cadugan does not get to show off his actual talents and expertise often enough. π
Hang on…are we talking "The Name of the Rose" type shenanigans here?
Now, for it to be Name of the Rose sort of shenanigans, that would implicate that the book in question would be in high esteem and also considered heretical. And that someone knew this and had opportunity to booby-trap said book. There would also have to be traces of the discolouration on at least one digit.

Not sure if I should groan or applaud that pun, Fnordius, so I’ll do both.
Love the reference made in homage to the book, and seeing everybody’s reactions to it. Such a creative mystery, it’s marvelous to see it ecoing π
"The Name of the Pratt"?
Assuming, of course, that "prattroot" isn’t the name for the entire flower/plant, of course…
Woohoo!! I was right about the poisoning!!
*gives digital high five*
Nice work! I’m a sucker for the misdirection that’s part and parcel of these kinds of stories, so it’s great to see someone figure it out.
Before the magic ebbed, I suspect Prattroot got its name by increasing the chances of accidents happening to those unlucky enough to ingest it.
Physicians referred to these as Pratt falls.
That is pratt-icularly ingenious.
Niccccce… both of you!
And much later we are told the weed was a component of her favorite dish: prattatouille.
Hey, Rich –
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

Well, i accept i was negligent. I needen’t one of them to remember such a thing like them.
I’m late joining the chorus, but I think it’s still in your timezone – Happy birthday!

Hugs! I’m thinking you’re more disappointed than we are, because the lack of time you get to spend in the world, and for that I’m sorry for your sake.
Out of curiosity, not pressure, will there be an extended let up at some point? I mean such as between seasons? I’ve no idea how 4he industry works.
I know I’m late to tha party, but still: Best wishes Rich!
