A neat piece of world lore slipped in there. Looks like it’s "officially" no longer cool to view orcs as an evil species. Probably goes for goblinoids too, though from the reaction Lucas’s drivers draw, not yet for Dark Mistresses.
The drow, I imagine, would be seriously offended if the world declared them not-necessarily-evil. Which is a great reason to do exactly that, just to watch them stew.
I think it’s merely "good" and "evil" that have fallen out of vogue, but that doesn’t mean all old prejudices are gone. The Dark Mistresses were relatively rare, and I suspect not seen outside of the Black Mountain until after the war with Ranna and the gang-pressing that grew their ranks. So most people will have only heard of them, never seen one in real life.
Another thing is that for those who have seen them, they still can be overtly masochistic, which will make many uncomfortable. So people will whisper.
So yeah, old prejudices about those into torture and S&M may still exist, but let’s not flog the topic too much. I wouldn’t want to whip chat into a frenzy…
Puns aside, yeah, that’s what I’m thinking too. Lady Marion had explained to everyone that good and evil don’t really exist, and then both sides in the war had both "good" and "evil" species, and then the Goddess of "Good" is now gone and the Goddess of "Evil" is trapped in another realm… that all has got to have thrown a big monkey wrench into the concept of alignments.
Or "good" and "evil" got redefined after the Rannite war, based on who fought on which side. In case of folks (or nations) who had participants on both sides, this may depend on where were more of them. So the orcs, who were majorly (if not only) against Ranna are not evil anymore. Dark Mistresses on the other hand, are seen as evil, and those of them fought against her might face prejudices.
Okay, speaking of multiple views, the mirror-thing in the background confuses me. Is it a mirror in which we can see both Lucas and an open window looking out on mountains? Is it a window that’s casting a reflection of Lucas superposed on the view of the outside world? Is it a Portal portal, ’cause GLaDOS is our newest crossover villain?
(Also, I guess the whole issue of the lock or lack thereof on Maula’s door is moot if she has a window.)
Ah, she looks so much better with her hair down! And it is nice to see Cadugan laughing. It is also nice to see that she can be the one to make him laugh.
I don’t know that I have ever seen a comic artist with such a masterful touch when it comes to mirrors and scene staging.
The exchange between Maula and Cadugan might end up revealing whether Maula knows (and chooses to let others KNOW she knows) that Pratroot isn’t lethal to wood elves. It would throw another element into the investigators’ calculus of "Who might have done what, in what order, and why."
I still like the idea that Maula and Taurenil (and possibly the Abbot) were in cahoots to fake Taurenil’s death by pratroot for reasons unknown, but everything went to hell when their gambit collided with at least two others.
Even the Captain seems to have chuckled at that 😀
We sure Maula is an orc? Cause that was Trollish.
Maula is softening that edge that she had to flash at the beginning of their meeting, at least she’s starting to calm down. I love it! XD
It takes hard work to maintain a reputation like Maula’s!!
Maula lets her hair down in more than one way.

Careful what you say in front of Maula, you might excite her. I seem to recall that she enjoyed some time spent in dungeons.

There’s nothing wrong with a joke shared between two chaotic races… It’s ideal for relations.
A sense of whimsy is a necessary survival tool during imprisonment.
It’s all the sweeter when pranking someone with no sense of humor!
I always appreciate Rich’s ability to see multiple views, both in his artwork and his characters.

The mountains, with the rectangular frame around them, are a painting on the wall behind Lucas being reflected in the mirror.
…and it all snaps into perspective.
Thanks!
What amuses me about the reflection in the mirror is the reflection of Lucas’es finger x)

From the Captain’s reaction, you might be right.
Mamma has never really struck me as ‘evil’ per se, just mirror a product of her environment and culture.
I’ve always loved, from just about the very beginning, how Rich plays with the notion of Good and Evil in this comic.
