Daddy Dearest (worstest) is dang lucky that she didn't have access to even a stick to use as a sword or the fight wouldn't have lasted more than a few seconds.
So we are back to the belt (amulet) of masculinity/femininity.
. I assume the protection side of the magic was more a placebo effect and young Katherine was just lucky, otherwise an amuletvof protection which breaks when attacked isn't much use.
Maybe it was protective in a different way than we assumed. Like protecting her from being courted. Or protecting Eldwig's interests in a way. Or protecting her from her dad.
Also, as others said, it might have broken, because magic is thinner than it was before. It might have been resilient to attacks originally, and now the magic was only strong enough to maintain the transformation, but nothing more.
Could be the amulet was to protect against some sort of political horseshit? One possibility is that some jerkwad might have wanted to marry Louise as part of some sort of realpolitik maneuver, and Dad didn't agree but didn't have the (political) power to refuse said jerkwad. But if the girl wasn't a girl…
I’m still wearing the cross I got when I was 1 month old. The chain’s a little short now, making it a little difficult to take it off or put it on, but I’m wearing it just fine.
All she has said is that it was put on her when she was little. That could be anywhere from 1-3 years of age by my reckoning, although it could be as much as 5yo. As for the other, magical chain to always be the right length?
What I'm wondering is her mother's reaction and feelings about this.
The fight was the catalyst, the weakening of magic also weakened the chain enough that the tussle could break the chain.
However, I doubt that it was weakening magic as such as the effect wore off suddenly once it was removed. No androgyne phase in between, instead one panel it's "I can write my name in the snow" to "my chest feels bigger", though still just before full puberty so who knows?
So, her father thinks she can do things like a boy that can't do like a girl.
Well, we knew he was a total dork and douchebag.
He didn't even have brains.
And, we will be serious. All of us knows the truth. Louis or Katherine Louise are so real so she can do what she wants. Like man or woman.
My scanner's okay. I just over did the level shift to make it nighttime in the strip. It doesn’t always look the same in Photoshop as it does when I publish it for some reason.
Huh, he likes to abuse women so much, slap the amulet on him and see if it still has enough magic left, and will work the other direction as well. I bet he would have a big problem dealing with that. Though the magic of the amulet may be fading because of the general magic depletion. It is possible that the charm (if there was one) to keep the chain from breaking was entirely separate from the gender reversal, and so might falter at a different rate.
What if it wasn’t him who put the amulet on originally? It was the mother, knowing a daughter would be subject to abuse like herself and wanted to give Louise a chance? She just told her husband it was protective and he welded it on.
My headcanon involves Arachne rising from the dead thanks to her appearance on the previous page to this (1) and showing Mr Steward the error of his ways.
(1: She's done wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff before. It could happen!)
Fuller lips. I needed there to be SOME characteristics that changed or the whole scene falls a little flat.
And I wasn't about to her her pants fall off with a tight-in shot of her groin.
I am very glad to see you are still here, Rich. 🙂
There have been twists and turns aplenty, both in the wider world and in the world of your creation, but it is good to see the story continues.
They got nuked a while ago. When DM went back to school for the PhD and lost her free time they stopped getting all the updates needed and eventually they broke to the point that spambots abandoned the place. Since many of the updates to get it running again were no longer available, well, see first line.
Ah, I think I get it. Only heirs can inherit the family estate, and under old customs, girls are married off to another family. That's why we used to have dowries. He's still a bastard, but it's based on old customs.
ONE: It really was protecting Katherine – by making her into Louis, she was shielded from a world where women were at a disadvantage. Or some other thing where it was for her own good. It's possible, but what we have seen of her father, it's not likely he would have invested in magic for altruistic reasons.
TWO: having a Louis instead of a Katherine Louise was advantageous to the father. And the man is enough of a plotter that he had it done before Louis could remember being Katherine. The less we see of Eldwig Steward the better, as he seems to have had no redeeming features. After all, we also learned that he only saw his wife as an asset to be exploited as well.
And if you never loved me now,
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
We will never break the chain…
Most discounted it because of what K-L said (as Louis) back in Episode 3316: "Dad had this amulet of protection welded around my neck as a little kid. I'm never in any danger from a mortal assailant as long as I wear it."
I get the impression that her father was the sort that saw girls as targets. Let's hope Katherine-Louise tells us more in the next episode!
Huh, I wonder if this has anything to do with the next one after it (the anniversary post) not having a number? Some people had problems seeing 3563 when it first came out though, then it seemed to be fixed, now it seems to be gone again.
Such a magic item would have solved a lot of Henry VIII's problems….
Not even to mention his wives' problems.
So that’s how it was.
And I’m guessing it’s because Mr. Steward wanted a male heir for his ambitions.
Yea he's the sort to have that bs mentality
Unfortunately, back then, women couldn't inherit the crown
I wondered if that was the answer.
My bet is she can still take him hand-to-hand, much less with a blade.
Daddy Dearest (worstest) is dang lucky that she didn't have access to even a stick to use as a sword or the fight wouldn't have lasted more than a few seconds.
More and more vile, Edwig Steward is.
So we are back to the belt (amulet) of masculinity/femininity.
. I assume the protection side of the magic was more a placebo effect and young Katherine was just lucky, otherwise an amuletvof protection which breaks when attacked isn't much use.
I'm betting there never was any protective magic. That was just a lie by Edwig.
Yeah, so that Louise wouldn’t take it off.
Hopefully we will get our answers soon enough. 🙂

The bastard Dilandau'd her!
I was thinking of princess Ozma that's how Mab the mad hid her in the Oz books turned her into a boy and raised him as her apprentice
Wait. How long had she been wearing the amulet for exactly? Trying to imagine how it wouldn't just fall off baby Katherine.
I’m still wearing the cross I got when I was 1 month old. The chain’s a little short now, making it a little difficult to take it off or put it on, but I’m wearing it just fine.

He had some deal about having his "son" betrothed to some aristocrats daughter for a boost in status/inheritance?
Best guess. The chain broke because the magic was depleted, in keeping with the general direction the strip is going in.
Not because of the fight?
The fight was the catalyst, the weakening of magic also weakened the chain enough that the tussle could break the chain.
However, I doubt that it was weakening magic as such as the effect wore off suddenly once it was removed. No androgyne phase in between, instead one panel it's "I can write my name in the snow" to "my chest feels bigger", though still just before full puberty so who knows?
Rich does. He's the weakest link in my logic.
Speaking of weak links, I wonder how the link that broke parted in TWO spots. That doesn't match my experience with jewelry chains.
Maybe because the power running through the amulet went amok and broke out, it shattered the material?
It's one spot. The upper part of the chain is covered by some shadow the text-box casts.
Good catch, THAT bard. There is an edit to the image where a rectangle of the original has been cut.
It was welded by a bard using Polt as their flux
So, her father thinks she can do things like a boy that can't do like a girl.
Well, we knew he was a total dork and douchebag.
He didn't even have brains.

Awww, your scanner is not a happy camper. Happy to see the update regardless!
My scanner's okay. I just over did the level shift to make it nighttime in the strip. It doesn’t always look the same in Photoshop as it does when I publish it for some reason.

Which then really did make it protective, but not in the way everyone thought.
That makes a squicky kind of sense
Great to see you're still here, Rich!
My headcanon involves Arachne rising from the dead thanks to her appearance on the previous page to this (1) and showing Mr Steward the error of his ways.

Heh, so the amulet also hid lipstick? . . . Which I guess had been on her since she was little? 😉
Fuller lips. I needed there to be SOME characteristics that changed or the whole scene falls a little flat.
And I wasn't about to her her pants fall off with a tight-in shot of her groin.
My guess would be, "because your father was an entitled bastard".
I am very glad to see you are still here, Rich. 🙂

As an aside — what happened to the forums? ^^;
They got nuked a while ago. When DM went back to school for the PhD and lost her free time they stopped getting all the updates needed and eventually they broke to the point that spambots abandoned the place. Aw. I'm sorry to hear it.
We had a lot of good times on that forum.
😐
Ah, I think I get it. Only heirs can inherit the family estate, and under old customs, girls are married off to another family. That's why we used to have dowries. He's still a bastard, but it's based on old customs.
I love that there's no shortage of speculative reasons why this PoS did what he did.
t!
I'm glad you're so… charmed.
Basically, the guesses are in two camps:
ONE: It really was protecting Katherine – by making her into Louis, she was shielded from a world where women were at a disadvantage. Or some other thing where it was for her own good. It's possible, but what we have seen of her father, it's not likely he would have invested in magic for altruistic reasons.

And if you never loved me now,
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
We will never break the chain…
Oh, he has a redeeming feature. A very punchable face.
alternatively, it could be as someone said above- the MOTHER put it on her to protect her from her father's abuse?
Most discounted it because of what K-L said (as Louis) back in Episode 3316: "Dad had this amulet of protection welded around my neck as a little kid. I'm never in any danger from a mortal assailant as long as I wear it."

This feels like an inverse Bridget from Guilty Gear thing
Then he was a she, She said "Hey babe"…
Do we want to know how the changes happen? I know I don't.
Still here?
The readers aren't going anywhere.
Comic 3563 seems to be broken… the image 404's.
I can concur.
Huh, I wonder if this has anything to do with the next one after it (the anniversary post) not having a number? Some people had problems seeing 3563 when it first came out though, then it seemed to be fixed, now it seems to be gone again.
And now YAFGC title image (at the top of this page) is broken also.
It's ironic that the page that is gone now is also the page where Rich commented
"she's as trans as my trans friend would let me portray."
Too trans after all? 😉 Nah, just a coincidence I bet.
Hey people!!!!!
Good mood and good luck to everyone!!!!!
We could use an update on how Rich is doing…
