It’s a nice change of pace to see regular life going on (I have "Concerning Hobbits" playing in my head right now…but the odds of it lasting are probably somewhere far below zero.
(I mean in a general overall fate-of-the-world sense, of course.)
The hobbits will kill them with kindness of course. And lots of yummy food. They’ll forsake their evil ways and decide to settle down and enjoy life instead.
My, this strip is a particularly splendid example of Rich’s narrative chops. Think about how many things we’ve inferred about these two, from a total of five panels’ acquaintance with them…
Actually, ! believe Tolkien said that he invented the word Hobbit based on the word habit, because they were habitual hoarders of junk. They could never throw anything out because "it could have a use" one day.
I’d never heard that one. I repeatedly heard the line about how he was marking papers, found himself confronted with a blank page and wrote out the first thing that came into his head, which was the first line of "The Hobbit": "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit", which he claimed he just made up wholecloth, though others have found similar words in other languages he’d have known.
When I was younger I was given a big book of The Hobbit as a birthday present. One day I read the intro and some excerpt from another author. Something about how Tolkien wanted to release the whole history of the elves in 11 volumes, but his publisher refused. So I got curious and went online to find out more and probably discovered this tidbit of info from an interview with the man himself. People were always asking him where he got his ideas from, and he’d let slip a morsel here and there to some of them. Of course it’s not scientific but I quite like the idea that Hobbits are hoarders and it fits with the book in a few places, it is mentioned.
The contrast between the harsh cruelty in the last strip and the bubble of harmony in this strip is really stark. Hoping that bubble isn’t about to pop.
Well done sir! *applauds*
Cypress is a bit of a trick, though none of it is pure invention at this point. All the characters in this ark were seeded a long time ago.
I’m pretty sure Rich must have edited the cast database to include the ‘"Roberta" Harper’ part after I made that comment, or at least after I checked the cast page for it.
Instead of "Concerning Hobbits," I have "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" playing in my head. I’m sure my mental soundtrack will change to something more sinister when tbe Rannites arrive.
That last panel…Ryann’s smitten! Awww!

Well, this storyline is concerning hobbits.
Perhaps it will feature concerning hobbits as well.
Yes its a lovely scene but in the back of your mind is the horrible thought : what’s it going to be like when the Rannites get there ?
The hobbits will kill them with kindness of course. And lots of yummy food. They’ll forsake their evil ways and decide to settle down and enjoy life instead.
God, I love this.
Because life goes on.
t!
Hmm… Methinks I see some colour…
Her name is Naomi Phoenixm why does he call her "Mrs. D"?
Naomi married someone whose name starts with ‘D’?
Oh no! She married Princess Dewcup! This poor…entire village!
I fear for the young lady.
She lives in dangerous times and the Rannites are everywhere.
Poor lad is the typical teenage horror movie victim.

I. . . I just got the joke in the chapter title.
Gonna go hide under the bed in shame, now.

11 volumes just about elves? I think we are still missing some.

PS you nailed the title on this one, Rich.
Thank you. 🙂
This is Ryann’s first appearance, but we know her parents https://yafgc.net/comic/3110-skin-of-his-teeth/
I also wondered about Cypress’s parents, but there is no other Harper or any Roberta in the cast page.
Well done sir! *applauds*

I didn’t catch on to that! So she’s one of Cadugan’s half-siblings, awesome!
Whoa! O_O
Hold on. If you go back to the flashback introducing Naomi Phoenix, there’s also a Perendelee "Roberta" Harper right there.
I’m pretty sure Rich must have edited the cast database to include the ‘"Roberta" Harper’ part after I made that comment, or at least after I checked the cast page for it.

I KNEW Ryann’s name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t quite remember whose kid she was meant to be.
Ørjan: Nice catch, there!
Looking back, the freckles make it kind of obvious in hindsight! 😉
A halfling as a half-sibling……hmmmm….
(Sorry, just couldn’t resist!) 🙂
Also, Cypress is the boy, not the girl.
The previous post was supposed to be a reply to Obscuria’s remark. Somehow the reply feature bumped me to the bottom of the page.
When I wrote "she", I did mean Ryann, not Cypress. 🙂
Oops….
So two of Charla’s childhood friends (not counting her sister) have their own kids now…
The way you draw Halfling gals never fails to steal my heart. I have a weakness both for good girls and for petite women, so… *shrug*
They’re somehow both cute and sexy hunh? Heheh.
