This is a forum where we can discuss "The 10 Doctors: The Video", a DarthNexus78 production! Thanks to Lewis, we have the address on YouTube where the current first draft, first part of DarthNexus78's amazing and monumental project can be found: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=sdjTn3Z2LUk

I wanted to set up a topic in the forum where we could move discussions of the video to not clog up the comments on page 163 and also because many may have missed DarthNexus78's post because most people probably were reading 'Artist on Holiday' by the time the news was posted.

Anyway, great work Rich for the comic, Hillary for the support and DarthNexus78 for the video and thank you all for all the hours of enjoyment!

This was pretty good. I did something similar with half a page at a time thru pages 84, using soundtrack from the show and a slideshow program <g>, not half so elaborate as yours with doing an actual panel by panel animation and adding sounds for each bit. Fantasic vid!

I like the idea of using the 5 second bumps of each Doctor's intro between parts - shows often have a 1 second shot like that just before they fade to commercial, to ease the transistion of a commercial insert.

Another idea would be instead of using them for each part, only use them when the page/next part takes them to another part of the story altogether, sometimes you could use the intro fitting the Doctor we're about to visit, other times you could just randomly pick them in turn as large parts of the story concern companions from all the Doctors, or several Doctors together.

See how much work we're willing to happily pile onto you? Rich will tell you that is the sign of an enthusiastic audience

Alrighty! The new version of Doctor Who: The Ten Doctors has been uploaded onto YouTube, so, please tell me which one you prefer (the original or the new one) and I will delete the one you have decided is not the best. If you think I should keep both up please, also let me know.

But you forgot to include the link!

And there you are.

Both are good, but the shorter intro is definately better.

Hello, again just finishing up Part 2. Because I want to end the video with a cliffhanger or a scene change I've decided to end part 2 at Page 21 (or if any of you can think of a more appropriate place?). I would like to ask you your opinions in one of the minor details. What do you think would be the best way to segway to another scene, in the same video? In my opinion a diagonal, down, right wipe transition would suffice nicely for this purpose, just like what the "Star Wars" movies use whenever a scene changes. Please reply soon!

Wipes would be fine, but for a lot of Rich's panels one picture is actually fading into the next (tardis/cardis dematerializing/materializing bits, the fade from 7th to 8th in a moment of cosmic angst) so if you have the option of more than one transition, that would be cool to switch over for the action shots <g>

(Slideshow programs I have dont usually offer a choice - its one design or random)

I tried, as often as possible, to imply the transitions myself. A character in the same position as the previous character, or an establishing shot.
Maybe a hard cut instead of a cross-dissolve would work.
Or fade to black, fade from black.
I was never fond of the Star Wars cartoon wipes, myself, but in an animatic situation like you've got here the options are limited.
Can you do pans? Some of my panels (like the one where all the Doctors are calling out their names, for example) are extended and could be panned across instead of broken into smaller panels.

In relply to M'reen, I would keep the panel transitions as they were in part 1 but what i'm talking about is when an entire scene storyline changes, for example on page 11 when the 8th doctor is talking to president Flavia, that is one distinct scene. but in the same video i would have to change the scene via a wipe, because immediatly after this scene we go to where The Master, is revived, this is a major scene transition. do you understand, what i mean? so shall i keep the wipe (personally i think it works great in that particular instance)
PS, Part 2 begins with the 8th doctors's floating head, for 5 sec before the comic begins (is this wat you meant TimeHorse?)

-Thanks, Darthnexus78

Wipes work pretty well for a scene change in anime, it sounds good to me.

Don't forget to post a link here when you complete part 2!

and, since you did anyway-

so no one misses out!

The wipes worked fine, and were quick enough not to detract from the style.

Excellent work! Great fun to view this way.

Panel-to-panel it's quite a bit too fast, though. I'm a pretty fast reader, and there were panels that I would just finish reading as the transition started. I suggest speaking the lines out loud to get a sense of how long to keep each panel in view.

Another idea that would be cool (though much more work) would be to split panels up into multiple frames, based on speech bubbles. Just white out the bubbles and fade between the frames, so that the lines of dialogue come into view one at a time as the lines get "spoken." This would be a way to slow the pacing down to give people time to read, without it losing visual interest.

In any case, thanks for the diversion! Wonderful job so far.

I just saw the 10 Doctors video, and while I enjoyed it, I am worried that it may upset Rich and Hilary's work by getting a cease and desist order from the BBC. Just let them finish the comic and then you can YouTube it until the aggadors come home.
