Really? Someone else who digs opera?

Who do you prefer--Callas or Tebaldi?

Lehmann.

I did succumb to the temptation of buying the Gui Parsifal beause of Callas, but after I adjusted to the cuts and the shock of hearing things in Italian, it was the grandeur of Christoff that won me over.

I picked up the EMI Puccini anniversary box which does have several Tebaldi recordings. I'll have to listen to that more, but it is the famous Callas Tosca with Di Stefano and Gobbi which I regard as the yardstick.

Anyway, on this board shouldn't we be discussing fantasy opera, even if it does involve a male ruler of the black elves? On that I can say that I find Frantz more godlike that Hotter whose voice I find rather a strange tone at times. Hotter is however excellent as the more mortal Gurnemanz. Among more recent performers I've found that I've generally preferred Morris and his wonderful legato to Tomlinson as Wotan. However, I have fallen for Tomlinson's magnificently evil Hagen and his Ochs.

I do enjoy the genre but i admit i am falling for the stories, music and theatrical performance (when i have a chance to see it live, that is) and i hardly notice the different voices. Apart from Callas, that is, who is very distinctive. I am surprised how often someone is dubbed the New Callas, and how few live up to it.
